Lesson 6 💌: You don’t have to change who you are or how you look to be taken seriously.

Looking back, I don’t think it was the complaint itself that affected me most. It was what I took away from it.

That perhaps if I dressed a little differently, wore less makeup, made less effort with my appearance, blended in a little more… people might take me more seriously.

And I think we have all been there…

Changed something about ourselves, not because we wanted to, but because we worried about how we might be perceived.

Of course, there are professional standards, dress codes and safety considerations. I’ve spent my career in medicine, and I understand their importance.

But there’s a difference between dressing appropriately for your job and feeling you have to dull your personality to be respected in it.

At the time, I was a young medical student. I didn’t question it. I just put on scrubs and got on with my day.

And perhaps that’s the bit I’d do differently now. Not necessarily the clothes, but the assumption that someone else’s judgement of my appearance must mean there was something wrong with it.

As I raise my daughters, I want them to understand that feedback is important, but not every opinion requires them to change.

You can be feminine, enjoy fashion, love makeup, wear pink shoes AND be intelligent, capable and professional.

One doesn’t cancel out the other.

And I wish my younger self had understood that a little sooner.

Have you ever changed how you look or dress because you worried you wouldn’t be taken seriously?

Indian cricketer Shubman Gill’s Chandigarh villa is reportedly worth ₹3.2 crore. The white residence features elegant wooden interiors, a beautifully maintained garden, a private gym and a regal bedroom with ornate decor.

People expect a Moroccan girl
to focus only on home and family.

They see time spent at the gym
and think something feels off.
Like she is choosing herself
over what she was taught.

But taking care of my body
changes nothing about my roots.
It does not erase how I grew up.

My culture stays with me.
So does the freedom
to build a habit that feels right now.

You can keep both.
The values and the routine.

Arcani comes out this week.

I am incredibly proud of this album and I am humbled by the gargantuan efforts of my wonderful bandmates that collectively made Arcani a reality.

I can't wait to share these stories with you on October 16th 🔮.
