British Army commandos from the 148 (Meiktila) Commando Forward Observation Battery successfully conducted a complex joint operation with the German Navy Type 212A submarine U36 during "Exercise Strike Warrior" in 2026. High swells and strong waves initially prevented the commandos from driving their rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) directly onto the submarine's casing. The team adapted by using a ladder to successfully secure the boat alongside U36. After boarding, the commandos traveled submerged before deploying via inflatable raiding craft to the shore of Cape Wrath. There, they set up covert observation posts to identify targets and coordinate live naval gunfire support. The operation seamlessly linked German submarine intelligence with British land observation and a Portuguese warship (NRP D. Francisco de Almeida), which provided the offshore firepower. The 148 Battery is a specialized Army unit attached to the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, operating directly in support of the Royal Marine Commando Force.
