THE NUMBER ONE SPORTING EXPERIENCE TO HAVE BEFORE YOU DIE (IF YOU HAVE GIGANTIC BALLS) I was told not to go alone, because if I sounded and moved like a gringo I’d get stabbed. With the level 1 Spanish I know and months of planning, I managed to find a ticket and go alone anyway. Just a 37hr flight from India 🇮🇳. The Superclásico at La Bombonera, Boca vs River Plate. I’m still buzzing and I don’t know where to start. There aren’t any away fans because of how insane and violent this derby gets. I was in Zona Norte, the most hardcore section, behind the goal. I’d been warned there are no physical seats and it’s rowdy. But okay, whatever. I didn’t plan on missing the full experience. It was like a live human meat grinder. You don’t get to stand and watch, you get passed around and crushed between people. I started on the right, got pushed to the left, and somehow ended up all the way in the back. People were climbing over and moving under each other. I had no control over my arms and legs. Half the time your feet aren’t on the ground and you’re just wedged between thousands of bodies, going wherever they go. This ain’t for the faint-hearted fam. If you have anxiety or you’re claustrophobic, I don’t suggest this experience. You will probably die. The ultras around me figured out pretty quickly that I wasn’t from there. Instead of stabbing me, they were hugging me, singing with me and making me sing along. It was fucking crazy! La Bombonera is something else. Everyone’s singing, everyone’s jumping, and you can see the stands of the entire stadium bouncing weird like an earthquake has just hit. It’s fucking insane. The songs, the noise, the emotion, it’s the most visceral atmosphere I’ve been in. I wondered if anyone was watching the game, because the whole thing is such a fucking spectacle. The football atmosphere in England feels like a silent retreat compared to Argentina. My 3 solo weeks are coming to an end. One of the friendliest countries I’ve ever been to, and probably the most unreal experience I’ve ever had. Don’t trust everything you see on the internet. Come see it for yourself!
