Former Indian Army Major Khushboo Patani has sparked discussion online after sharing a self-defence video urging women to learn how to use an air pistol, saying they should not have to depend on others for their safety. In the video, Patani, who is also actor Disha Patani’s elder sister, can be seen holding a CO₂-powered .177 air pistol modelled after a Glock. She clarified that the weapon shown was an air gun and not a conventional firearm using live ammunition. “Girls, this is a copy of the Glock. It’s a CO₂ air pistol,” Patani said while encouraging women to undergo proper training at a shooting range. She added that women should learn how such equipment is handled rather than relying entirely on someone else for protection. Patani said the air pistol fires pellets instead of conventional bullets and claimed that these could potentially injure or deter an attacker in an emergency. Her Instagram caption also carried a disclaimer saying the demonstration was “only for self-defence” and stressed that an air pistol should be handled responsibly and not treated as a toy. The former Army officer linked her message to concerns surrounding women’s safety in the country and said, “There’s no need to depend on people.” She also repeatedly stressed the importance of training before handling such equipment. However, the legal position on air guns in India depends on their specifications. According to the Union Home Ministry’s Arms Rules guidance, air weapons exceeding 20 joules of muzzle energy or a bore of more than .177 inches, or 4.5 mm, require a licence. Air weapons within the prescribed lower limits are not subjected to the same licensing requirement, although their sale is regulated through licensed air-weapon dealers. Patani has previously posted several self-defence and emergency-preparedness videos online. In 2025, she also demonstrated ways people could respond during dangerous situations using ordinary objects, while emphasising awareness and training.
