Rolling out from 1 Oct, the Australian Government's Thriving Kids initiative will begin connecting children with extra developmental needs, and their carers, with the right support.

In this timely episode of Talking Teaching, Dr Sophie Specjal is joined by Professor Frank Oberklaid AM and Associate Professor Matt Harrison to discuss the significant impact of early intervention.

...why aren't the children with autism "at the centre of it"? ....If the child is being supported in an evidence based child centred way, this assists the parents, family, and the child that needs support...

So as teachers we will be able to refer children without parent consent? Because one of the biggest barriers is sometimes families turning away from discussions about their child’s development

Mechanisms? Where? In North Queensland our Child Development Service has just changed the referral pathway…only GPs can refer. Not a parent. Not a teacher.. Given Thriving Kids is being passed on to individual States to run there will be zero continuity so sweeping statements such as this are fundamentally incorrect.

Loading up parents of disabled kids with more is not going to end well

It would be great to know what those supports are.

We were already doing that as skilled therapists. This is purely an attempt to claw back power for big players who lost control through NDIS. Pure selfishness.

Where are the details of the Thriving Kids program? What mechanisms will actually be in place? Most families are currently on hold, waiting for the program to roll out in October. It’s a difficult program to promote when we don’t have the details, and we still don’t know who will be delivering it locally. Families need clear information about what the program involves, how it will work, and who will be providing it before they can make informed decisions.
