I time traveled to Houston in 1866—one year after the first Juneteenth.

I expected to find uncertainty. Instead, I found formerly enslaved families building freedom with their own hands.

When Ruth looked across the unfinished floor and softly asked, “Can I sleep here?” everything changed. That house wasn’t merely timber and nails. It meant safety, ownership and the beginning of a future they could finally call their own.

Later generations hand-laid Freedmen’s Town’s historic brick streets. More than a century later, part of that brickwork still remains in Houston—carrying the memory of the community that built it.

Did you know this history? Where should I time travel next?

I can't remember his name, but there was a founder of early Houston who gained freedom from slavery and tried to free his wife and children from slavery but they were sold to Texas before he could free them. He walked all the way from the east coast to Texas where he was caught and sold into slavery, though united with his family. They all got freedom during emancipation and he built a church. There are a number of places named after him. I'm sorry I can't remember his name off hand
