Tough day for us NYCers, some of us now being ex-NYCers. I went to work, not knowing we would have to evacuate hours later. I couldn't access my downtown apartment building and was meandering around wondering when and where the next attack would be. I went to a pay phone and called Danielle, one of my college roommates who lived there, and she took me in. Mobile phone service was intermittent but I called another friend in WTC2 who had just barely escaped (almost everyone at his firm who worked that day perished). Somehow he had the wherewithal to say "Go get food, cash and water. We live on an island and are now at war". That evening I walked the 30-some blocks to my apartment in the West Village. Cars were not allowed below 14th Street so the streets were eerily empty and the air smelled like burnt plastic.
Days later I made my WTC2 friend eat lunch-he hadnt eaten in days. He took one bite of his sandwich and bawled. Survivors guilt and the reality of what he'd survived landing on him. We still touch base on this day.
The first two photos are from 1982 and yes that's my sister and I 😂. The rest are from the roof of my apartment building 25yrs ago and St. Vincent's plastered with missing-person fliers. 💔
