A Time of Witches was exactly the book to open my autumn TBR with. Witchy, atmospheric, and full of that feminine rage I always want from a fall read.
Two timelines run through this one. Lilith is in present day Georgia, and her life starts falling apart after her mother dies, plants bending toward her, animals trailing her, visions of burning at the stake that wonโt leave her alone. Then thereโs Sybil, a widow in 1645 Suffolk, accused of witchcraft by men who couldnโt stand her independence. The jumps between the two never felt jarring, though Sybilโs chapters are rough going at times given how brutal that history actually was.
Honestly, the mystery and the supernatural elements kept me turning pages, but itโs the bond between these women across centuries that stuck with me. Thereโs romance here, sure, but at its core this is a book about friendship and womanhood. Sybil fighting to protect her sister, Lilith piecing together a legacy that could get her killed too, thatโs the heart of it.
The research behind this one is obvious. Martin named several characters after real women who died in the witch trials, and once I knew that, Sybilโs story hit even harder. Also, the authorโs note at the end is worth reading on its own, and the recipes tucked in were such a nice surprise to close things out.
If youโre into dual timeline historical fiction with a supernatural edge and feminist bones, add this one to your stack this fall.
