Many women with endometriosis are told they can't take HRT, and that simply isn't true. This week on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, Nicola Roberts joined me to share her experience of living with endometriosis since her periods started at the age of 12. She was put on the pill at 13 and diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis at 25, and she then spent years on the Depo-Provera injection, which left her with low mood, body aches and osteoporosis by the age of 40. Depo-Provera contains a synthetic progestogen that works by blocking the action of estradiol in the body and the brain, so it's a bit like giving someone a menopause straight off. Many of the women I see with endometriosis have low testosterone and low progesterone, and synthetic hormone treatments can lower these levels even further. Nicola now takes estradiol, progesterone and testosterone and told me she feels the best she has since she was 12, which shows how much women with endometriosis can gain when they are offered the right hormones.
