Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s ‘The Kuutar Garden’ delves into the botanical afterlife deep beneath Oulu, a Finnish city that sits just below the Arctic Circle. MONA was commissioned to produce a series of introductory videos interviewing the artist to understand more about this major site-specific installation.

Opening September 18 as one of the central projects of the European Capital of Culture in Oulu, ‘The Kuutar Garden’ draws on ecological fieldwork, botanical seed banks and Finnish, Baltic and Karelian mythologies of the afterlife, transporting audiences into an otherworldly state.

In this clip, Steensen discusses the moon goddess who inspired the virtual world he has created.
