On a chilly day in March, a twice-deported Romanian national walked into a 7-Eleven in Toledo, Ohio, and secretly affixed a device called a skimmer to a credit card machine, prosecutors say. The man was allegedly part of a California-based criminal crew led by a fellow Romanian nicknamed Piranha.⁠ ⁠ The gang’s aim, according to criminal charges, was to steal food-stamp benefits from customers who swiped their government-issued debit cards at the convenience store.⁠ ⁠ Court records show informants helped foil the plot. But authorities say the operation mirrors a playbook Romanian organized crime groups are using across the U.S. to swindle hundreds of millions of dollars in public benefits. Reliance by states on antiquated magnetic-stripe technology makes it easier.⁠ ⁠ The gangs depend on secretive “builders” who meticulously construct skimming devices that even diligent merchants can miss, investigators say. The illicit proceeds pay for rented luxury cars and homes with infinity pools, according to authorities. Cash in the form of crypto is spirited back to Romania and flows to real estate, gambling and crime bosses.⁠ ⁠ There are no recent official estimates of how much money has been stolen. But the Agriculture Department said the federal government replaced $360 million in benefits stolen from 754,000 households between October 2022 and December 2024, before Congress withdrew that authority. Few states now pick up the tab. Defrauded SNAP recipients often must turn to family or food pantries until their next monthly allotment.⁠ ⁠ Despite the Trump administration’s crackdown on public-benefits fraud, criminals have broadened their tactics, authorities say. They use bots to guess welfare recipients’ account numbers. هنوز چند دقیقه ای تا شروع کلاس مونده بود برای همین کنار خیابون وایسادیم زهرا دست به سینه نگاهی به ماشینهای عبوری انداخت و گفت: فکر نمیکردم یه روز ببینم تو پشت فرمون نشستی پوزخند زدم و گفتم منم فکر نمیکردم ولی خب... زندگی مجبورم کرد. چند دقیقه بعد یه ماشین سفید آموزش رانندگی جلوی ما توقف کرد. مربیم پیاده شد یه مرد قد بلند با تیپ خیلی مردونه مرتب و باوقار نگاهش جدی بود یه لبخند کوتاه زد و گفت: خانم احمدی آماده اید؟ سرمو تکون دادم و گفتم: بله زهرا زیر لب گفت چقدر جدیه و با شیطنت لبخند زد. مربی اشاره کرد و گفت بفرمایید کمربندتون رو ببندید. بعد رو به زهرا کرد و با احترام گفت شما هم بفرمایید. زهرا با لبخند نشست عقب و آروم گفت: ماشالله ادب ماشین که راه افتاد حس کردم استرسم بیشتر شد مربی با صدای آرومی گفت: خونسرد باشید همه از صفر شروع میکنن مهم اینه که نترسید. یه نفس عمیق کشیدم و فرمون رو محکم تر گرفتم از گوشه چشم دیدم که زهرا با لبخند نگام میکنه و انگار تو ذهنش یه عالمه حرف داره که بعداً قراره بهم بزنه.... مربی با دقت به دستام نگاه کرد و گفت خیلی محکم فرمون رو نگیرین دستهاتون باید انعطاف داشته باشه. سرمو تکون دادم و سعی کردم آرومتر فرمون رو بگیرم هنوز کمی استرس داشتم ولی حس کردم که برخورد آروم و با احترامش باعث میشه کمتر بترسم. زهرا از عقب با خنده گفت: نسیم منو سالم برسونی ها! با حرص گفتم ساکت ،زهرا استرسمو بیشتر نکن مربی لبخند آرومیزد ولی چیزی نگفت. بعد از چند دقیقه گفت حالا آروم راه بیفتین دنده یک کلاج رو تا ته بگیرین... درسته حالا آروم آروم ول کنین ماشین به تکون خورد ولی حرکت کرد قلبم تند میزد، انگار یکی توی سینه م در حال کوبیدن بود. زهرا دست به سینه نشست و گفت: "به، به سلامتی یه راننده دیگه به دنیا اضافه شد! مربی جدی ولی مهربون :گفت حواستون به جلو باشه به بقیه هم کار نداشته باشین یه نفس عمیق کشیدم و تمرکز کردم خیابون خلوت بود ولی باز هم حس میکردم یه عالمه آدم دارن نگام میکنن مربی بعد از چند دقیقه گفت خیلی خوب حالا به آرومی دنده دو... درسته آفرین زهرا از عقب گفت وای" خدا باورم نمیشه نسیم داره رانندگی میکنه پوزخند زدم و گفتم زهرا میشه لطفا ساکت باشی مربی لبخند کوتاهی زد و گفت خوبه، آروم تر نفس بکشین رانندگی یعنی تسلط و آرامش به راننده خوب کسیه که ماشینو با اطمینان کنترل کنه با شنیدن حرفش حس کردم یه کم اعتماد به نفس پیدا کردم اولین بار بود که حس میکردم واقعاً بتونم رانندگی یاد بگیرم. ادامه کامنت این داستان بازنویسی شده داستان سرنوشت است
