(Swipe>>>) The ensemble is more than musicians playing alongside one another.
From its earliest formations, collective improvisation sat at the centre, carefully balancing the tension between the freedom of the individual held inside the responsibility of the collective.
As the genre evolved, so did the possibilities of the ensemble. From small groups built around collective improvisation, to the orchestral force of the big-band era, to bebop’s quartets and quintets. Alongside marabi, kwela, mbaqanga, choral traditions and the musical languages already surrounding them, resulting in increasingly experimental formations.
Across generations, the ensemble continues to function as a meeting place between composition and improvisation; inherited musical lineages, new ideas, and individual technique. Where musicians build new musical languages collectively, stretching at the edges of the form.
This December, we turn our attention to the ensemble.
