15년 전, 무턱대고 떠났던 마다가스카르에서의 3개월간의 봉사활동. 그 시절 인연을 맺었던 AMI 학교 학생들과 평생 잊지 못할 은인이신 선교사님들께서 마침 제가 출장 와 있는 곳 근처에서 특송을 부르신다는 소식을 듣고 한걸음에 달려갔습니다.
오랜 시간이 지났음에도 저를 기억해 주시며 반겨주시는 모습에 눈물이 왈칵 쏟아질 뻔한 것을 꾹 참았습니다. 저만을 위해 합창단 모두가 마음을 담아 불러준 노래는 그 어떤 것보다 큰 위로이자 힘이 되는 소중한 선물 같았습니다.
나를 기억해 주는 사람들, 그리고 잊고 지냈던 나의 소중함을 다시금 깨닫게 해 준 마법 같던 3개월. "곧 다시 찾아오겠다"는 약속을 남기고 발걸음을 돌려야 했기에 아쉬움이 많이 남지만, 마음만큼은 그 어느 때보다 따뜻하고 벅차오르는 하루였습니다.
About 15 years ago, I packed up and impulsively headed to Madagascar for three months of volunteer work. Recently, I heard that the students from the AMI School and the missionaries I met back then, who were such a profound blessing in my life, were singing a special praise right near the place where I was currently on a business trip, so I rushed right over.
Seeing them remember and welcome me with such warmth after all this time almost brought me to tears, but I held them back. Hearing the entire choir sing just for me was an incredible, deeply touching gift that gave me so much strength.
Those three months reminded me of who I am and showed me that I am remembered and cherished. Leaving with a promise to return soon made it hard to turn away, but my heart is overflowing with gratitude.
