"I hate the word punk."

Johnny Thunders talking rock 'n' roll with Shay Healy on RTÉ's 'Nighthawks', broadcast 26 April 1990, in the middle of his acoustic tour of the UK and Ireland.

In one of the best and wittiest interviews he ever gave, Johnny comes across as rock 'n' roll swagger embodied: sharp, funny and completely unrepentant. He tells a story about Dee Dee Ramone hanging out at 53rd and 3rd, and he rejects the label that followed him his whole career: "I was never a punk, I never played punk music." He blames Malcolm McLaren for the end of the New York Dolls and talks about his influences. He also praises The Sex Pistols as one of the rock 'n' roll bands that took the baton from New York. On influence, he keeps it simple: Keith took it from Chuck Berry, and Johnny took it from Keith. He ends with a jab at the state of music in the early 90s: "Today music has no roots."

Almost exactly a year after this aired, on 23 April 1991, he was found dead at the St. Peter House in New Orleans, the day after arriving in town. He was 38.

Eternal glory to Johnny Thunders. A true rock 'n' roll hero.
