No big freighter has gone down in open water on the Great Lakes since the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. Almost every accident on this route since then has happened in a river, a canal or a lock. This is the whole trip an ocean ship makes out of Duluth with a load of wheat: about 2,200 miles, 16 locks, and 600 feet downhill to the Atlantic at Cabot Strait. At 13 knots with no delays it takes about a week. The narrow places are the story. Ships built for this route are 78 feet wide and the locks are 80. The channel through the Thousand Islands squeezes to 450 feet, and two ocean ships lost their steering there a year apart, in 2014 and 2015. The seven locks above Montreal close in early January. In January 2026, eleven ocean ships were still above Montreal when the deadline passed. The deadliest spot on the route is not on a lake at all. It is in the St. Lawrence near Rimouski, where the Empress of Ireland sank in fog in 1914 with 1,012 people. Modeled in Blender. Ship track from the Army Corps waterway network. tw: pregnancy loss 🦋 The most joyous 12 weeks of my life in an instant turned into the most devestating 24 hours of my life. Right before leaving for a month to travel the world and celebrate love, Cecil and I found out we were expecting our first child! Our journey to parenthood has not been easy, so finding out we were finally pregnant felt so surreal We spent the following weeks imagining our future, writing their names, buying their first souvenir toys, and falling more in love with someone we hadn’t even met yet. We got to see and hear our baby’s strong heartbeat and little movements and couldn’t wait for the life ahead. At our 12 week appointment, the “safe” point when we thought we’d be one step closer to meeting our baby , we received the heartbreaking news that the pregnancy was no longer viable and within hours my miscarriage began , my water broke and I painfully and naturally delivered our baby at home Nothing at all can prepare you for this kind of heartbreak. I feel forever changed and honestly superhuman from the physical experience but more importantly, I deeply miss the bond I’d already formed with our child. As devastated as we both are, we’re so grateful we got to experience this kind of love, even if only for a little while. We hope they enjoyed the ride with us but are having the best time up above 🤍
