These laundry detergents are BANNED in New York… That “clean laundry” smell isn’t what clean smells like. Many of the most popular detergents can contain 1,4-dioxane. The EPA classifies it as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” More often than not, these companies are casually omitting these from their labels. It’s a byproduct of ethoxylation, the process used to make many common detergent ingredients. What the research shows: A 2021 Yale study gave mice 1,4-dioxane in their drinking water for 3 months. It caused: → Oxidative stress in the liver (more oxidized glutathione and a build-up of lipid peroxidation) → Oxidative DNA damage (8-OHdG and γH2AX both went up) → Higher levels of CYP2E1, the enzyme that breaks down 1,4-dioxane. The study links it to the damage. What the study shows is how it may cause harm: oxidative stress and DNA damage. That’s a good reason to keep your exposure as low as you can, especially when exposure can rather easily be avoided.. PMID: 34600989 How to choose a better detergent: 1) Skip “fragrance” and “parfum.” Choose unscented. 2) Watch for “-eth” ingredients (like sodium laureth sulfate), “PEG” and “polyethylene glycol.” These are the ingredients 1,4-dioxane can come with. 3) Choose brands that publish their 1,4-dioxane testing. 4) do what I do: wash with white vinegar. It’s cheap, it works, and it isn’t adding a chemical burden. Clean shouldn’t have a smell.
