Those of you who know my wife Erica know that she’s a huge badass. However, her badassery has reached new heights as of late. We’ve been pulling root systems at our house out of the ground since February and removed holly bushes, and Erica has replaced them with a butterfly garden that has become a haven and thriving ecosystem for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. She’s not done yet! Still more to plant. It’s all her vision- I’m just a guy with a shovel! 😂

Here’s how to write a hook so good it is scientifically impossible to skip. This is called the Triple Hook Method. And if you do this right, it will hypnotize the viewer in a way where they physically cannot scroll away. Step 1 is the Context. This is the basic step, but so many people still get this wrong. Viewers only watch content where they have a vested interest in the topic. So the first line of the hook must establish context on what the video will be about. You can say it in the audio, show it in the visuals, write it in the text or caption, ideally all 3 aligned, but this context must be established immediately. We’ve have data that shows even delaying context towards the end of the first sentence causes the skip rate to go way up. So priority number 1 is to set immediate context. Now Step 2 is where most people mess up. This is the lean. What you’re trying to do is get someone curious in a certain direction. You want them to lean in on the context and actively want to hear more. Now you can make this lean happen in a variety of ways… But regardless of which method you pick, the viewer must lean in and not opt out. So when you read back that first 1-2 sentences on its own…is the context clear and is there something curiosity inducing that would make you lean in and want to hear more? Context Lean…this is what “opens the curiosity loop” you hear people talk about. Now step 3 is really where the money’s made. I call this, the Contrarian Snapback. To catch a fish, you get the hook in its mouth swimming one way, and then you jerk back the other way. Not to be morbid. Storytelling is the same way. The goal is to say something that pulls the viewer away from the direction they were just leaning. Essentially, snapping them back down another path.
