F*ck Cancer.

It has been such a humbling experience to have gotten to know you beyond just being my stepmother. Of course there are limitless stories that haven't touched my ears that would allow me to understand at a deeper level but nonetheless tapping only into what I know...

You've shown me what continual growth looks like. What being the emotional center of a family looks like.

A flower forever blooming.

Our journey together exemplified a true dance of humanity. But when two people can move through hard moments and see each other on the other side, it truly touches a human emotion that, in hindsight, was VERY deep for me. Through doing your part in raising me to experiencing the grief of losing your firstborn son and to us on our individual and collective growth journeys. It didn't require words, it only needed love, understanding and showing up. And you showed up...even when it was HARD for you, literally... I HONOR that and I saw YOU.

It's taught me so much and informs how I move in the world.

I'm so grateful. I promise to carry all of it forward. Rest now, Ma'am. I love you.

NANDA DEVI, 1976 — THE STORY CONTINUES When Devi finally reached Camp IV shortly before midnight, she was exhausted. She had been suffering from severe diarrhea and a hernia. At 7,350 metres, her strength was fading. Over the following days, she remained in camp while the weather deteriorated. On September 6, her father, Willi Unsoeld, climbed up to join her, Peter Lev and Andy Harvard. Despite everything, there was still laughter in the tent. They drank tea, talked and remembered earlier climbs. Devi was weak, but nobody expected what was about to happen. On September 7, a blizzard kept them inside. Devi had a terrible night. By morning, they knew they had to get her down. There would be no summit attempt. On September 8, at 11:45 a.m., they were preparing to leave when Devi suddenly asked Peter Lev to check her pulse. Then she said, very calmly: “I am going to die.” Moments later, she lost consciousness. Willi and Andy tried desperately to revive her. They continued for more than half an hour. But Devi was gone. She was only 22 years old. At that altitude, on such difficult terrain, it was impossible to bring her body down. Willi, Andy and Peter knelt together in the snow and said their farewells. Willi and Andy wrapped Devi in her sleeping bag and committed her body to the mountain after which she had been named.Willi gave one last yodel into the mountains. There was no answer. Then the three men began their descent through the blizzard. It was dangerous. At one point, Peter discovered that the fixed rope he was descending was hanging free, unattached at its lower end, above the precipice. They finally reached Camp III at 10 p.m. Days later, back at Base Camp, Willi sent a telegram home to Jolene, Devi’s mother. It contained the words: “Body committed to mountain.
