Someone posted this bill with “Jesus, look at this bill.” So I looked.

One filling and a four-unit bridge, at $608 per crown. That’s one of the lowest crown fees you’ll see.

Out of that $608, the dentist pays the lab for each crown, the impression materials, the temporaries, the cement, and the sterilization. Then the rent, the hygienist, the assistant, the front desk, and malpractice insurance. Every unit takes two long appointments in the chair. What’s left for the dentist is a small slice.

Now look at the insurance line. It’s estimated at about half on most units and nothing on the last one. That’s why the balance is $1,590.

The bill isn’t the scandal. What insurance paid is.

Before you blame the office, ask what your plan actually pays for a crown. And remember, these fees largely haven’t moved much in DECADES. Anyone else having a hard time negotiating fees?

Grayson appreciation post 🐈‍⬛ 💕 And if you didn’t hear, season 14 of My Big Fat Fabulous Life is airing November 10 at 10pm EST!
