4 glasses of water. They look identical. They’re not. 💧 Miami tap vs. Brita vs. an under-sink carbon filter vs. reverse osmosis, all tested with a TDS meter. Swipe to see which one actually filters ➡️ The test: a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter 🧪 It measures how much is dissolved in your water. That gives a quick, visual read on how hard each filter is really working. Lower number = more removed. Your water is either building your health or slowly loading you up. Unfiltered tap can carry PFAS (“forever chemicals”), pesticides, traces of pharmaceuticals, chlorine byproducts, arsenic, heavy metals and fluoride. A 2025 meta-analysis of 74 studies in children linked higher fluoride exposure to lower IQ scores (PMID: 9761023). Baseline: Miami tap water 👉 143 ppm That’s a lot of dissolved solids, and it’s the number every filter has to beat. Want to know what’s in YOUR tap water? The Environmental Working Group’s Tap Water Database lets you search by zip code. Miami: 22 contaminants detected, 11 above EWG’s health guidelines. That includes bromodichloromethane at 36x their guideline, plus hexavalent chromium, which can create reactive oxygen species that damage DNA. I don’t even shower in unfiltered tap water 🚿 Chlorine byproducts called trihalomethanes turn to vapor in hot water, and you breathe them in and absorb them through your skin. In a human study, 10-minute showers raised blood THM levels more than drinking a liter of the same tap water (PMID: 10981726). Brita: almost exactly the same reading as tap 😑😑 The white filter mostly targets zinc, copper, cadmium and mercury. The blue one does a bit more but still leaves fluoride, arsenic, other heavy metals and forever chemicals. Better than tap? Yes. Good enough to drink every day? Not making the cut for me. High-density carbon under-sink filter: 94 ppm A real step up from Brita, and it keeps more calcium and magnesium. The rub: carbon filters like this don’t remove fluoride or arsenic. “Isn’t RO too clean? Isn’t it ‘dead water’?” My take: no. You get plenty of minerals from food: calcium from milk, magnesium from fruit, and minerals from coconut water. A small mineral loss is wor

At 91, Loretta Green wears a piece of voting rights history each time she casts her ballot: her 1960 poll tax exemption certificate. Green, an Air Force veteran who served during the Korean War, was exempt from paying the tax because of her military service. Issued when she lived in Alabama, the document certified that she could vote without paying, a right other voters faced financial barriers to exercise. Under Jim Crow, Southern states used poll taxes alongside literacy tests and intimidation to suppress Black voters. The amounts and rules varied by state. Alabama’s annual tax was $1.50, and unpaid taxes could accumulate, turning two years of payments into $3 and three years into $4.50: an obstacle for people with little money to spare. Poll tax receipts documented payment; exemption certificates like Green’s documented that the holder did not have to pay. The 24th Amendment banned poll taxes in federal elections in 1964. In 1966, the Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional in state elections as well. Today, Green uses her certificate to teach younger generations about the barriers Black Americans faced, and the importance of exercising their right to vote. How long do you need to use tretinoin for anti-aging? 🧴 Tretinoin can improve fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of photoaging, but maintaining those improvements generally requires continued use. If you stop using it, some of the benefits can gradually fade over time. The good news is that daily application may not be necessary forever! After using tretinoin consistently for around a year, some people may be able to maintain their results by applying it a few times per week, depending on their skin and how well they tolerate treatment. Remember, more is not always better. Finding a frequency that your skin tolerates and that you can maintain consistently is key. Do you use tretinoin every day, or have you found that a few times per week works better for your skin? Let me know in the comments! 👇 #Tretinoin #Retinoids #AntiAgingSkincare #Dermatologist #SkincareTips DrDray
