Modern Desk Jobs Impact On Weight Gain
Step counts are significantly lower than they were ten years ago, and a big part of that is how much working patterns have changed.
Think about what a commute into the office actually involves. Getting to the car, walking from where you park to the office, a couple of flights of stairs, back and forth to the water machine, to the toilet, to a colleague’s desk, then reversing the whole thing on the way home. None of it feels like exercise. But it all adds up.
For a lot of people working from home now, all of that has gone. You roll out of bed, walk to the desk, and the furthest you travel all day is to the kitchen and back.
Add in cars, electric scooters, electric bikes - all the things that make life easier and more convenient - and the average person is moving significantly less than previous generations did just going about their normal day.
This isn’t about blaming anyone for how they live. It’s just worth understanding that if your weight has crept up and you can’t work out why, a gradual collapse in daily movement over the last few years is a very likely part of the answer.
