Zhuhai Race Weekend Recap | August 13–16, 2026 🏁
It was my first time racing at Zhuhai International Circuit, joining Wings Racing with their 3 drivers, and driving their GR86 “GT5”—faster than the factory Cup car!
It felt great to drive a RWD car again. Using a sequential gearbox for the first time was exciting, and the SRD 3-way suspension made the car an absolute joy to drive.
Saturday morning started with 3 qualifying sessions. Grid order was decided by the combined best times of 3 drivers. I set a 1:57.339 in traffic, qualifying P1 in the 2000 class in my session. My other 2 teammates also took P1 in class in their sessions, earning us class pole position and P10 overall!
Having friends come to watch the race on Sunday made it even more special. I showed them around the paddock and pits before taking the opening stint.
With a couple of quick and aggressive competitors behind me, I chose to give them room at the start and focus on settling into my own rhythm.
The biggest challenge during my stint was a technical issue with our Code 60 device. It signals all drivers to slow to 60 km/h during an incident and provides a countdown for the restart. Our device wasn’t activating, so I had to rely on team radio for updates. We lost valuable time reacting to several restarts while other drivers had the signal directly in their cars.
Even so, I brought the car back safely and handed it over without damage, up from P10 to P8 overall.
About 20 minutes into my teammate’s stint,
@marxwell_chen called to tell me our car had hit the wall. Thankfully, our rookie teammate was okay and needed only ice packs for his neck.
We later found that a left-rear suspension component had failed after running over the Turn 9 curb, causing a spin. Unsure of the cause, he continued, but the compromised geometry led to an axle failure that sent the car into the barrier.
A disappointing DNF, but a valuable weekend learning a new car and circuit, taking advice from our fastest driver, and making new friends.
Huge thanks to Wings Racing for the opportunity, and to my family and friends for always supporting me!❤️
