A Seattle couple says they were forced to endure an unimaginable four-hour drive with their deceased infant son after an Oregon hospital allegedly failed to help arrange transportation for his body.

Aleksandr and Nataliya Yeremeyev have filed a $10 million lawsuit against Salem Health and Dr. Stefani Sorensen over the handling of their nearly 9-month-old son Michael’s remains following his d*ath in September 2024.

Michael, who was born with Down syndrome, became ill while his family was attending a religious retreat in Salem, Oregon. He was rushed to Salem Health Hospital after developing rapid, shallow breathing but later d*ed in the emergency room 💔

According to the lawsuit, the grieving parents asked staff how they could respectfully transport Michael’s body back to Seattle. They claim hospital workers discouraged contacting a local funeral home because it would be “too expensive” and instead pressured them to take their son themselves.

“They felt rushed that they had to make quick decisions and the hospital left them with no choice other than to take Michael’s body with them and head back to Seattle,” family attorney Anna Bruckenhoefer said.

Aleksandr allegedly drove roughly four hours with Michael’s body lying across the backseat while Nataliya and their other children followed separately. The lawsuit says he feared being stopped by police, getting into an accident and watching his son’s body deteriorate.

“No parents, no loved ones should ever be placed in the position that the Yeremeyev’s were placed in,” Bruckenhoefer said.

Salem Health disputes the allegations, saying it “responded in accordance with the family’s wishes” and followed hospital policy and Oregon law.
