🚨AM I RAISING AN ENTITLED KID???🚨

You say no to them and it’s instant chaos - meltdown, arguing, insisting, the “but whyyyy” on repeat - just the way they expect you to drop everything the SECOND they want something.

And you have that split-second spiral like “Wait… is this just a typical kid thing?? Or do I have an overly entitled kid on my hands??”

As a child therapist, I hear this all the time - listen, I’ve had the thought myself. It’s GOOD to pause and ask yourself this. We love our kids so damn much but none of us want to raise a kid who can’t handle “no,” who expects everything to go their way, or who falls apart the second things don’t. It’s just not good for real life.

This substack article is ⚡️the Therapist’s Guide to NOT Raising an Entitled Kid⚡️, and it breaks down exactly how to handle entitlement and the 7 concrete, science-backed shifts that build kids who can handle “no,” move through disappointment, and don’t expect the world to revolve around them.

It’s all about building the actual skills your kid needs to function in real life. The way you handle “no” today is shaping who your child becomes tomorrow.

In a time of social media use norms, we are finding a harder time of tracing sources and identifying Black style expressions to be regionally exclusive. The internet is a fee market for global inspiration. Not all is lost though, some styles have such deep roots that they’re either undeniable to their origins, or they never left where they’re from, but without proper documentation it just feels rather ubiquitous now. So, a larger part of Blue’s reason of returning to archival research on Black hair culture is because she wanted to know “Who are the originators?” What are their names? Where did these styles come from, specifically? And what can they inform us about our lineage and heritage as African Americans when we look at photographs?

For this shoot, Blue was inspired by two archive references. One, was from the early peaks of ethnic hair portraiture, “head modeling,” and the style was photographed by Austin Hansen in the 1950s. This inspired the braid design. The second archive photo, a Black woman lying lackadaisically on a bed of cotton, inspired the hair direction’s materiality. Regina wears wooden beads to adorn the braids, and Blue chose denim to wrap the hair, expressing symbolic commentary on the cyclical nature and product value that come from the origins of Black and brown innovation.

Ackime’s film photographs are an honorable interpretation of “head model” portraiture, while depositing implicative modernity to continue the preservation of Black hair and beauty culture in print. The muse, Regina, is styled with fashion that aims to exaggerate the techniques demonstrated in the hair designs, such as the braid graphically wrapping her leg. This work honors the art of hair stylists, like Renee, and Black hair expression.

You’ve seen the moments. Now prepare for the whole spectacle. 🔥
