I’ve only done these 3 times with the group, both with approach box jumps, and hurdles. Athletes seem to LOVE hurdles, so naturally there’s more intent & creativity involved. Pair that with certain constraints, let them figure it out (or guide lightly), and you can get some cool outcomes.
The constraint here was that you have to rotate in air (don’t care if it’s 90 up to 360 degrees). This gets athletes to be more aggressive with that final step which will cause the rotation.
During these, I really try to just sit back and watch / hype them up. At some point we’ve already touched on the specific focuses of their jump (powerful penultimate, swing your arms, whip your foot around), so that’s in the back of their head. This is an easy way to drive intent and allow those points to come out more naturally.
The freestyle jump sessions are a concept I got from
@freestyle_jump_guy . It’s definitely something I’ll use more.
It wasn’t even until I watched these vids back that I noticed how much self organization was happening. Easily the best his approach has looked. Shoutout to my guy AD. I first coached him late 2024 and dudes come an incredibly long way on the court, as an athlete, and as a human.
