One account of the show’s development says the writers considered having them go to rehab together, then leave Albuquerque with Jesse’s money. It would have kept Jane in the series longer and given Jesse a chance at stability much earlier.

The version that aired takes them right to the edge of that future. Jane gets Walt to hand over the money, and she and Jesse talk about getting clean and starting over in New Zealand. That night, they use h*roin again. Walt finds Jane choking and lets her d*e. Jesse goes to rehab alone, believing her d*ath was his fault. Carrying a loss that follows him through the rest of the series.
