A woman in green trousers walking a long stone kerb with her cardigan in one hand and her earphones in, going somewhere she's been going for years. A couple crossing cobbles in matched denim, an Opéra National t-shirt, a tote from a café, neither of them trying. And three heads bent over one phone on a granite step, which is how every group decision in this city gets made. No monuments in any of these. Paris does its best work at pavement level, between the things you came to see.
