The new Ramayana trailer has details that are easy to miss. Some go all the way back to ancient texts. 👀
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, looks set to tell a bigger story than the battle we already know.
Take Ravana. The trailers hint at his rise to power, including his confrontation with Indra, king of the devas. In Ramayana traditions, Ravana’s conquests also involve his half-brother Kubera, the god of wealth, from whom he seizes Lanka and the Pushpaka Vimana. Imagine seeing the making of the villain before his eventual defeat.
Then there’s Rama’s archery. In Valmiki’s Aranya Kanda, Sage Agastya gives Rama a divine bow associated with Vishnu, a sword and TWO quivers with an inexhaustible supply of arrows. So those endless arrows on screen could be a reference to scripture, rather than cinematic exaggeration.
And remember the battle against 14,000 rakshasas led by Khara? It happens in Dandaka forest, long before the final war with Ravana.
The music deserves a second listen too. The repeated “kshama” (forgiveness) in the trailer could be read as a contrast to the violence on screen. It’s a beautiful interpretation, although the filmmakers haven’t confirmed it.
But the portrayal I’m most curious about is Sita. New footage shows her fighting back, a change from how she’s often depicted. Different Ramayana traditions portray her power differently. In the Adbhuta Ramayana, Sita takes a fierce form and defeats a thousand-headed Ravana. That doesn’t establish formal combat training in Valmiki’s text, but it shows how many layers her character has.
With music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, there are more details to decode before the November 5 release.
