Art of Play, a Brooklyn shop specializing in games, puzzles, and magic, has responded after the Grammy-winning singer publicly complained about her experience at the establishment. In a statement shared on Instagram, the business confirmed that Clarkson visited the store and expressed interest in purchasing a unique attraction. “Yesterday, Kelly Clarkson visited us in Brooklyn and inquired about buying ‘Molly,’ a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton who plays an important role in the magic shows we host here.” The store explained that the bird was not available for purchase, adding, “Molly is permanently attached to the wall and isn’t for sale.” While the business acknowledged Clarkson’s negative experience, it also defended its customer service practices. “The negative experience Kelly described on twitter would resonate with anyone who has ever felt judged in a shop.” The statement continued, “At Art of Play whether someone comes in to make a purchase or simply look around for a while, they are equally welcome. We greet everyone who walks in the door with the invitation to ‘pick things up and play.’” However, the store said it was caught off guard by the overwhelming attention and criticism that followed Clarkson’s public comments. “Imagine our surprise when our small local business was suddenly attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store.” The business added, “It’s been a surreal experience to be the focus of such widespread outrage after just one mention by a celebrity.” Despite the controversy, Art of Play expressed hope that the situation could eventually be resolved. “We’re going to keep our heads down and hopefully, we can clear things up with Kelly someday.” The store ended its statement with a playful reference to Clarkson’s hit song Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You), writing, “As a talented popular singer once said ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’” What are your thoughts on the store’s response to Kelly Clarkson?
