Vladimir Kush is a Russian-born American artist known for his surreal paintings and his distinctive style, which he calls Metaphorical Realism. Born in Moscow in 1965, he began drawing at an early age and studied at the Moscow Art Institute before moving to Los Angeles in 1990 to pursue his career. @kushfineart

His paintings transform everyday objects, animals, and natural landscapes into unexpected visual compositions. Ships become butterflies, candles take on new forms, and familiar elements merge into dreamlike scenes filled with symbolism.

His work explores themes such as nature, love, time, and the human experience through visual metaphors.
In 2001, Kush and his father founded Kush Fine Art, establishing galleries to showcase his work. He gained international recognition for his imaginative compositions and received first prize in painting at the 2012 Artistes du Monde exhibition in Cannes, France.

Comment DRILLS and I’ll DM you the info for the Drawing Drills course.

Here’s a simple drawing exercise for building cleaner, more controlled hatching.

Start with a row of evenly spaced hatch marks. Then create another set directly below them, carefully overlapping the ends so each mark appears to continue as one long, uninterrupted line.

The challenge is maintaining the same direction, spacing, and rhythm while making the transition almost invisible.

Exercises like this train line control, hand-eye coordination, accuracy, and consistency with a pen.

Clean hatching isn’t about drawing fast. It’s about learning to place each mark exactly where you intended.

Would you still buy me coffee if I act like this? ☕
