#HipHopHistory - On October 12, 1999, Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey) released his groundbreaking debut solo album, Black on Both Sides, through Rawkus and Priority Records. Blending soulful live instrumentation, sharp lyricism, and thought-provoking social commentary, the album became an instant hip-hop classic. Featuring timeless tracks like “Ms. Fat Booty,” “Mathematics,” and “Umi Says,” Mos Def showcased his versatility while addressing everything from love and identity to politics and social injustice. The critically acclaimed project reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart and peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200. It was certified Gold by the RIAA on February 2, 2000, surpassing 500,000 units sold. More than two decades later, Black on Both Sides remains one of hip-hop’s most respected debut albums, cementing Mos Def’s legacy as one of the genre’s most gifted lyricists.
