Meet Chex.
This nearly 15-foot male great white shark was encountered off the coast of Cape Cod while James Prosek worked alongside marine biologist Greg Skomal, who specializes in tagging and tracking great white sharks. Painted at life-size, Chex captures every scar, scrape, and imperfection, revealing the shark not just as a species, but as an individual shaped by its life in the ocean.
As Prosek explains, “I feel we become more invested in conservation if we acknowledge a single fish, and the scars and scrapes are evidence of their trials in life—where they’ve been, what they’ve been through. I want to show all of it, the residue of their own existence.”
See Chex and more in ‘James Prosek: At Work’, on view through October 25 at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.
