The American New Wave by Grady Rajagopalan (2026)

Rajagopalan’s series documents the youth culture of rural America, centered on his friends in the mountains of Virginia. Toward the end of high school, he went back through every photograph he had taken and organized them around a single idea: his generation’s tendency toward escapism took shape in the outdoors when they had access to natural landscape around them. His friends took risks and acted on impulse to get away from a digital world, and with the outdoors open to them there was little to hold them back.

The work is set against the sense that this period was coming to an end. Rajagopalan expected the mountains to be cleared for housing developments or for data centers that would draw on the mountain water for cooling, while the country split further apart politically, a division his town saw firsthand at the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. The series is built on his belief that his generation stands at the start of a new period of alternative thought.
