BDS WIN: NYC REJECTS ISRAEL BONDS. After over a year of growing pressure from the Break the Bonds NYC campaign, City Comptroller Mark Levine has finally backed down from his dangerous and irresponsible pledge to reinvest the city pension fund in Israel Bonds. This is a victory for all New Yorkers and a victory for the BDS movement. Israel Bonds are financially risky and morally corrupt investments that serve as a blank check to fund all of the Israeli government’s actions from carrying out genocide in Gaza, to bulldozing homes and building settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel Bonds’ instability reflects the volatility of Israel’s economy, which is fueled by endless war and built on an apartheid system. In 2023, then-Comptroller Brad Lander ended a decades-long state of exception, where Israel was the only country in which New York held sovereign bonds investments. Comptroller Mark Levine tried to play politics with the hard-earned pension fund of city workers and reinvest that money in Israel Bonds. However, because our movements consistently demonstrated the political popularity of ending our city’s complicity in genocide, apartheid, and occupation, he has backed down from that threat. This is a political earthquake. In the most Jewish city in the country, New Yorkers have made it clear that it’s no longer politically or financially viable to pledge unconditional support for the Israeli military and government. We’re winning. And we won’t rest until New York City has fully divested from the Israeli economy and until Palestine is free.
