words can’t explain how much this means to me and to finally be a part of this ongoing tradition. I know my time isn’t up yet but throughout my time I have learned from the people before me and can’t wait to wait to pass it on to the people after me. Cowardice? Moral collapse? As we near a pivotal election, 99 members of the US Senate still refuse to use the word “genocide” to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza even though the consensus opinion of almost every scholar and human rights group in the world is that a genocide is occurring. This deafening silence is obvious proof that the US government has subordinated a chunk of its foreign policy to the interests of another country. It’s not like one has to go out on a limb to use the word. In the rest of the world it’s not even controversial. The overwhelming consensus of the world’s 500 genocide scholars and leading human rights groups (including @amnesty and @humanrightswatch) is that the Netanyahu government is committing genocide. Yet all US Senators but Bernie Sanders refuse to use the word. Chuck Schumer refuses to use it. Chris Van Hollen, John Ossoff, Ed Markey, Susan Collins, Elizabeth Warren, and Elise Slotkin refuse to use it. My research also indicates not a single one of the 50 US governors (24 of them Dems) uses the word. The silence from the Democrats reinforces the notion that there is no effective national opposition party in the US. Certainly not one with the guts to take on Trump and the power structure. The Senate not only is silent, but has voted to send billions of dollars worth of bombs and other weaponry to Israel which are used to carry out the horrific acts. The crime of genocide was codified by the international community in 1948 as acts “committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.” At least seven credible international human rights groups or UN bodies have found that Israel’s actions meet the criteria. They include the Israel-based @btselem and Physicians for Human Rights. The International Court of Justice issued a provisional ruling in 2024 that acknowledged Israel was likely committing genocide. In 2025, a UN Commission of Inquiry released a devastating report finding that Israel is committing genocide. The list goes on and on. When facing the greatest moral issue of our time, 99% of Senators fail to call it like it is. Unconscionable. 👊👊
