Lesson 6 💌: You don’t have to change who you are or how you look to be taken seriously. Looking back, I don’t think it was the complaint itself that affected me most. It was what I took away from it. That perhaps if I dressed a little differently, wore less makeup, made less effort with my appearance, blended in a little more… people might take me more seriously. And I think we have all been there… Changed something about ourselves, not because we wanted to, but because we worried about how we might be perceived. Of course, there are professional standards, dress codes and safety considerations. I’ve spent my career in medicine, and I understand their importance. But there’s a difference between dressing appropriately for your job and feeling you have to dull your personality to be respected in it. At the time, I was a young medical student. I didn’t question it. I just put on scrubs and got on with my day. And perhaps that’s the bit I’d do differently now. Not necessarily the clothes, but the assumption that someone else’s judgement of my appearance must mean there was something wrong with it. As I raise my daughters, I want them to understand that feedback is important, but not every opinion requires them to change. You can be feminine, enjoy fashion, love makeup, wear pink shoes AND be intelligent, capable and professional. One doesn’t cancel out the other. And I wish my younger self had understood that a little sooner. Have you ever changed how you look or dress because you worried you wouldn’t be taken seriously?
Britt Stewart and Taylor Hanson were supposed to be the ones to watch this season of Dancing With the Stars. Hanson had no formal dance training, but he had ’90s nostalgia, a devoted fanbase, and a secret weapon: one of the most beloved pros in the show’s history. Instead, they were out in week three, and the internet is calling for “Justice for Britt.” At the link in bio, the DWTS pro opens up about the elimination, whether the “ringer” is a myth, meeting her husband on the show, and the little girl who ran up to her with a message she won’t forget.
