Happy birthday to our beloved friend visionary painter Chris Martin (@chrismartin764) who I’d met by chance on Bedford Avenue and North 7th Street in the summer of 1994, and whose close friendship was formed by this joyful encounter.

Over the years, Chris has taught me many things, including the overcoming my deep sense of moral, intellectual and emotional obligations to history, be it from the East or the West, as well as a profound appreciation of self-taught artists, for example, those of African American vernacular persuasions, including Thornton Dial, Minnie Evans, William Hawkins, Lonnie Holley (whom the Rail will be interviewing soon for the winter issue on the occasion of his survey forthcoming at Art Yard), and endless others who were associated with Rivington Home where Chris had worked as a full-time art therapist for 13 years.

I should also mention that Chris has significantly contributed to the Rail in its formative years when we were building substantive contents—I would say from the first issue of the Rail in October 2000 leading to Chris’s first solo exhibit at Mitchell Innes and Nash in January 2008, upon which time I insisted that Chris should be focusing on his own painting, not on writing for the Rail. For those of you who have read Chris’ several amazing interviews with artists, art historians, curators, including Leon Golub, Brice Marden, Uman, among endless others, as well as his now legendary essays such as Everything is Finished Nothing is Dead: An Article About Abstract Painting, Buddhism, Landscape, and the Absolute Truth About Abstract Painting, and so on, are aware of his remarkably generous yet formidable energy, which is visible in everything he has made thus far in his work.

Here are photos and one video from my archives of Chris, surrounded with his beloved partner Tamara Gonzales (@tamaragonzales) and friends, including EJ Hauser (@ej_hauser), Rail’s executive director James Rohbach (@jrohrbach), Kathetine Bradford (@kathebradford), Julian Schnabel (@julianschnabelstudio), Agnes Gund, Joe Bradley (@joebradleystudio), Bill Jensen, among others.

Chris Martin forever!
