Although being a very popular and relevant classic, the Volkswagen Golf GTI features only very rarely here on this account (but then again today you even get two for one!).
Of course the reluctance has a reason: In my youth, the Golf-people always formed a subculture of their own, and a very different one compared to the French car people I belonged to. Although my generation was called "Generation Golf" as a whole, this subtle division and isolation somehow still exists up to this day. Don't get me wrong: The Golf might well be one of the most important and influential car of the seventies, but the culture that formed itself around it never really got me. Not sure if this is the same in other countries though, would be interested to know from you!

When I see a classic Golf, 99% of the time it is a modified one: (very) low suspension, small wheels with big tyres, bespoke paint, wings etc...🫩 Or other modifications (tuning). In the same style I see VW T1, T2, Beetle and other '60 or '70s VW models. Not my style. At all. I prefer the original ones but those are so rare... 😉

There was a Golf vs others here in NL too. Like you I chose a French route with R5 GTT and a Clio RSI later. And much later a Megane RS. Never regretted it but I am sure I would have enjoyed a GTI as well.

Back then I wanted a 131 Supermirafiore… but money meant 127, a Fiorino and Pandas.
