Namun, setelah tiba di Rusia, para korban justru diarahkan menandatangani kontrak sebagai tentara bayaran. Bahkan, dalam salah satu kasus, mereka hanya menjalani pelatihan militer selama sebulan sebelum diterjunkan ke medan perang. Polisi telah menetapkan 13 tersangka dalam kasus ini. Modus perekrutannya pun terbilang berbahaya karena korban berisiko dikirim ke wilayah konflik tanpa jaminan keselamatan maupun perlindungan hukum.
