Ukraine’s military has paused its strikes on Russian oil refineries after weeks of pressure from the Trump administration, people with knowledge of the operations told The Wall Street Journal. The unofficial pause began early last week and is expected to last until after the November 3rd midterm elections, possibly deeper into November. Ukraine’s government has not announced it. President Zelenskyy said Tuesday his forces “do not have an order” not to hit refineries, that they have been “a little more careful,” and that drone units are hitting other targets in Russia.

Two U.S. officials told the Journal that envoy Jared Kushner repeated President Donald J. Trump’s demand to stop at an October 20th meeting with Zelenskyy in Oslo. One official said Kushner suggested a 30 day pause would be a way to show gratitude for mediation efforts. The Journal says Trump blames Ukraine for high fuel prices, which energy experts mostly attribute to the U.S.-Iran war. The last reported strike on Russian oil infrastructure was Oct. 20 on a Druzhba pipeline pumping station.

Zelenskyy has said Ukraine wants more protection for its energy infrastructure in exchange for holding off. The pause came as SpaceX limited Ukraine’s military Starshield service October 14th, and the Journal says full service was restored October 24th, three days after Trump asked Musk to lift the limits. U.S. officials denied that the two issues were linked.

Was the First Crusade really just a land grab by ambitious European knights?

It’s a common interpretation of the Crusades, but when we actually examine the evidence left behind by the men who took part, a very different picture begins to emerge.

In 1096, Achard of Montmerle mortgaged his property to the monastery of Cluny for 2,000 shillings and four mules to finance his journey to Jerusalem. He was killed during the Crusade, and the property passed to the monastery.

He wasn’t alone. Godfrey of Bouillon sold or mortgaged much of his property, while Stephen of Blois wrote to his wife about the terrible financial burden the crusaders were enduring. Some had exhausted their resources entirely, and others were struggling to find enough food to survive.

Of course, there were men who sought wealth, land and power. But the surviving charters and letters show just how costly this expedition could be, and how seriously many of its participants took their religious commitments.

If the First Crusade was simply an expedition motivated by greed, why were so many men prepared to sacrifice the wealth they already possessed to take part?

Perhaps the greater mistake is assuming that men living almost a thousand years ago must have been motivated by the same things that motivate us today.

Freshly uncovered at the @lasvegasconcours, a new company called @cavenatelier revealed HOMMAGE 26, the first project in its Designer Series.

The starting point is a design Giugiaro conceived at Italdesign way back in 1998, which went on to become the Lamborghini Gallardo. That design, the same age as Classic Driver might we add, is one of purity and drama, with lines that felt as sharp as a knife upon first viewing, but over the decades have aged into a wonderfully considered work of art. Now, almost three decades later he has returned to it through @gfg.style, armed with hindsight, modern technology and the freedom to try ideas that were out of reach when the original was being developed.
