Yews should be pruned in late winter/early spring which in Chicago would be mid to late March whenever you get a warm enough day to work. If you want to prune them again the same year you can, but you should do it between mid to late July. The plant starts shifting its energy to making food to survive the winter and pulling that down aa sap into the root so we don’t prune in late summer or fall.
