4 years yesterday.
I keep writing and rewriting a caption that best describes the magnitude of losing my mother.

I keep wishing I could express all the ways she showed me what strength and resilience look like in the face of catastrophic illness and an untimely death. But I just can’t do it justice. Maybe I’m just a little tired and still recovering from my cold.

I guess I just want to say her name. Christine, to the world. Mom, to me.

And, I want people to always ask me about her. I love talking about her wild side, her advocacy work, our complicated relationship, and how we came together in the end. I was so looking forward to more time with her. With this version of us.

But more than anything, I want to say this: I miss her. I miss her to my bones.

Living life without her here is weird and strange and lonely. She was the keeper of everything. She had the wisdom, the encouragement, the photographs, the family history, all the recipes, and so much more.

Today, life could not be happier. I could not be more thrilled to finally be living in my favorite city, NYC. Getting here took over 50 years, but I’m here. I wish she could experience it with me. Visit me.

She would love to see me this happy. She would even love to see how long my hair is. It’s a funny little thing, but its length and her are cosmically tied. I can’t explain it.

My work could not be more fulfilling. My relationship with my son could not be more solid. Those victories are everything, and yet they feel slightly less complete because she is not here to share them with me.

I wish she was here.

At 56, I still want my mom. I will never not want my mom. In all the ways that are infuriating, meaningful, complicated, and beyond words, I will always want my mom.

I’m not saying I’m a superhero… but have you ever seen me and Supergirl in the same room? 🦸🏼‍♀️✨
