TL;DR

We call this space “The Portal” because it’s a tiny space that makes no sense but takes you to different places.

It’s 4’X3’, with stairs down on one side, a door to the garage on another, extra high ceiling, and no light switch until you get all the way into the house.

I’m working on making the space useable with a “mudroom” bench and shelving. Unfortunately, the tight space is going to make this build a challenge.

But hey, when has that ever stopped me?

Stay tuned. Suggestions welcome.

@voxtarri @beingwanderful not bad ideas! I do want to change the swing of the garage door… ideally to an outward swing into the garage. But even adjusting it to open inward toward the basement would be better. I’d also love to get a door on the basement side for safety, but that could cause a problem if the garage door swung that way. I thought about the step stool and, while doable, might add to the crowded feel of the space. Unfortunately I don’t think raising the floor level is feasible given the basement and stairs into the garage. You’re totally right though, that would solve a lot! I’ll start playing with door swings and maybe get a door on the basement side 💪

Could you switch the doors around, so the inside door becomes the basement door swinging outward, then you have that little alcove mudroom open. Building shelving in the mudroom is important, but making it reachable at its tallest height is not. That's what stepstools are for. Also I'd be curious if there is a small enough floor level difference if you could raise the mudroom level so that the top step of the stairs and the garage is just a little higher but the mudroom is level with the house. That might not be safe but I'm curious.

There’s a case for the current swing of the door but personally I’d prefer right hand over left for this space so I could use the mudroom area when coming and going. Would be very dependent on basement access though
