October 10 will be Wimpy’s final day in Osterville - closing out an 88-year run in the village where it began.

Wimpy’s isn’t disappearing. It’s moving to the Roadhouse Cafe location in Hyannis, where it plans to remain open year-round. But after nearly nine decades, this is the end of an unmistakably Osterville chapter.

The story began in 1938, when Raymond and Winnie Hostetter opened a six-stool hamburger stand, partly to feed telephone workers who had nowhere nearby for lunch. The name came from J. Wellington Wimpy, Popeye’s hamburger-loving character.

Those six stools eventually grew into the 200+ seat restaurant generations know today. For roughly 40 years, one specialty was an oversized open-faced cheeseburger topped with onion, tomato, relish, and a single green olive.

Raymond and Winnie’s son Vincent “Skip” Hostetter, who grew up in the house behind Wimpy’s, started working there at eight, washing dishes and sweeping floors. He later graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and, after his father died in 1970, helped take over. Skip became known for doing everything from running the kitchen to renovations - even building Wimpy’s long bar from different woods.

The Hostetters owned Wimpy’s for 58 years before the Siscoe family bought it in 1996. In 2017, Raymond’s grandson Adam brought it back into the family. Fun fact: Adam also represented the U.S. in snowboarding at the 1998 Winter Olympics, when snowboarding made its Olympic debut.

The vintage photo here is from the era when it was billed as “Wimpy’s Restaurant & Tower Club.”

By then, Wimpy’s had long been woven into village life. Early Osterville Men’s Club members would gather at the Fox Hole before crossing the street to Wimpy’s for dinner. Generations came for the tavern, seafood market, fieldstone fireplace, family dinners, familiar servers, and traditions passed down through families.

For a place that started with six stools, it leaves quite a footprint.

Share your favorite Wimpy’s memory below - a go-to meal, favorite server, family tradition, old photo or anything else you’ll remember about the Osterville location.

😢 Yes, a hamburger joint could be referred to as a "spa" during the 1930s and 1940s, but only if you were in the Boston area or Eastern New England. [1] In this regional dialect, the word "spa" did not mean a place for a massage or facial. Instead, it was a common term for a neighborhood corner store, deli, or lunch counter that served casual food and featured a bubbling soda fountain.

Back in the day Ray hostetter and my father would be out on Nantucket Sound fishing usually on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. They would be out trolling for blue fish and whenever one of them, or one of their comrades, caught one they would get on the radio and say "Bingo". There were others on the same channel and wherever that occurred the others knew which yacht to look for. And they would gather around that area. Very often if the catch was good, we would notice there would be a handwritten sign in Wimpy's, advertising fresh bluefish that evening! We would know exactly where that came from... They will be missed in Osterville!

My daughter bused tables there when she was in high school and her son did the same this summer. It will be missed but glad that Adam found a new home in Hyannis (won’t be as convenient but close enough)

I had the pleasure of having the Soup & Sandwich Special each day during the summers of the 1960’s. I would accompany my boss Jack Denninger from the Centerville Flying A. The best chowder ever and Marge was the best ever waitress. Happy and peaceful times. ❤️🙏❤️

I have many happy memories of Wimpy's. It was a favorite of my grandparents and my mom. We had meant lunches and dinners there. I filled out my CCA application at Wimpy's and got ketchup on it 😂. They accepted me anyway. And many Easter and Mother's Day lunches there. After Mom moved her CPA practice to Osterville she got lunch from the market. I think most of her meals came from Wimpy's. If she were still alive she'd be angry you were moving 😂. But I'm glad you've got a new home - best of luck in Hyannis! Here's to many more happy memories!
