Syrah has been part of the Jackson McCrea story from the beginning.
When it came time to choose the second cask for our rye, we chose French oak barrels that had held Syrah—a wine I’d been drawn to long before Jackson McCrea.
And there’s something fascinating about Syrah.
Hiding in the skin of the grape is rotundone, a naturally occurring aromatic compound responsible for the black pepper character for which Syrah is known. It comes from the grape itself, shaped in the vineyard long before the wine ever reaches a barrel.
And not everyone can smell it
.
For some, it’s unmistakable. For others, it’s virtually invisible.
That kind of complexity is one of the reasons Syrah has always intrigued me. I’ve worked in wine for close to a decade, studied it even longer, and Syrah has always been one of those wines I return to.
Choosing Syrah barrels for Jackson McCrea was intentional and personal.
We wanted what Syrah could leave behind—its character, its structure, its nuance—and to let those traces reveal something new in our rye.
