Marigold Season at the Estate brings a collision of emotions from several directions at once. From the south, in Mexico, comes Día de los Muertos, when our friends begin making ofrendas and laying down Marigold petals so the dead can find their way home.

Almost in the same breath comes Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness. And laid over all of it is Halloween. At the heart of these celebrations is LOVE. For the family and friends who are still with us, and those we miss terribly.

Every year at Flamingo Estate, we make an ofrenda with Marigolds. We made this one a few years ago, photographed here with my two beloved dogs, Freeway and Daylesford. Both left us this year, after spending almost sixteen years by our sides. Looking at these photographs now, I can hardly believe they’re both gone.

This weekend, I’ll be lighting candles, laying down Marigolds, and leaving a few Greenies for them, hoping with all my heart that they find their way home.

Thank you, @vondutch, for having me at your Halloween party. Such a fun night playing Jessica Rabbit. 🍒
