“I’m just here so I don’t get fined” 😂
To know me is to know I’m not a fan of social media. But after launching a web series with two talented friends, they finally bullied me into creating an IG account. And honestly? They were right. So, here I am.
For those just tuning in, I’m Dwight, a creative and marketing exec with 20+ years of experience bringing content to life for brands like Airbnb and YouTube. After releasing myself from the matrix of corporate America, I decided to build something for myself and those around me.
A happy hour conversation about how much current media lacks soul (cause wtf is up with all the podcasts?!) quickly turned into a game night, which quickly turned into our new web series, Bop Academy. We developed the series October to December, I built the production team by February, and we were filming by April.
Day one, everyone on set knew we were creating something special. It honestly reminds me of how the cast and crew of classics like Waiting to Exhale and Set It Off talk about their time on set. We captured magic… shot live, in one take, with so much reverence and love.
Now, with over 180K views and 1K+ comments… It’s clear that others are seeing what we all saw from the beginning. And we thank you for watching.
Created completely independent of any studio and self-financed… This was a bet on me, my friends, and the originality that thrives when you give people the room to play. That ethos is the heartbeat of our production company, We Are CUZN. More to come on that later…
Which brings me to a broader point: we really need to stop celebrating creators getting validation or crumbs of deals from corporate monoliths and media conglomerates that fundamentally don't value us. The systems that, over time, actively contribute to our demise. Applauding any Black creator just for landing a show on platforms owned by power structures with anti-Black track records and political alignments isn't interesting to me at all. Real power isn't begging for a seat at their table; it's building your own house.
