I sat across the table from Sean Combs and negotiated a buyout and a signing.

I moved one of my own writers from Universal to Bad Boy. Everybody in that building told him not to do it. He did it anyway.

That writer was Shannon Jones. He is a Grammy winner now.

He owned the label. He owned the catalog. He turned down the flat liquor check and took a piece of the business instead. By 2022 the reports had him at a billion dollars.

He sold 90 percent of Sean John in 2016 for a reported 70 million, then bought his own brand back out of bankruptcy in 2021 for 7.5 million. In 2023 he gave the Bad Boy publishing back to Biggie's estate, Faith Evans, Mase, The Lox and 112 instead of selling it.

By the middle of 2024 the vodka was gone, the tequila was gone, Revolt was gone, and he was in a federal cell.

Nobody robbed him. He did the paperwork right and it still did not save him.

Ownership protects you from the label, the partner, even the tax man. It does not protect you from you.
