Thousands of Africans hoping to move to the United States through the Green Card Lottery face fresh uncertainty after a US appeals court blocked an order to reopen registration for the 2027 programme. On October 29, 2026, the court suspended an earlier ruling that required the US State Department to announce registration dates and open applications by November 1. The decision came after the Trump administration challenged the order, arguing that the law firm behind the case had not shown enough legal grounds to sue. The Green Card Lottery offers up to 55,000 immigrant visas every year, with Africans among the major beneficiaries. Registration for the 2027 programme remains on hold, with no confirmed opening date.
