Xie Yifei paints entire cities with a palette knife, one rooftop at a time 🏘️ The Chinese oil painter is known for huge, crowded cityscapes packed with colorful houses, balconies, water tanks, laundry lines and tiny windows. Instead of brushes, almost everything is done with a small palette knife. Each stroke lays down thick, textured paint, and he builds the city block by block across the canvas until the blank white surface is completely covered. Some of these paintings start with a light outline of the buildings. Others he paints straight onto the empty canvas with no sketch at all, finishing each house before moving on to the next. One of them took him from winter all the way to spring, and he joked that it nearly broke his back. Only at the very end does a fine brush come out, just to sign his name.
